The Terracotta Tile Architendance 2012-2022: the competition celebrates its 10th anniversary
In 10 years, the tile has become an architectural material
For Jean-Baptiste Fayet, President of the Groupement des Tuiliers of the French Federation of Tiles and Bricks: “The Architendance Terracotta Tile Grand Prize was created in 2012 on the initiative of the French Federation of Tiles and Bricks, supported by the Network of Architecture Houses. Its ambition is to give visibility every two years to exemplary contemporary architectural achievements using terracotta tiles on the roof or facade. In five editions, nearly 400 agencies have submitted projects. »
For Anne-Sophie Kehr, President of the Jury since 2018 and President of the Network of Maisons de l'Architecture: “From the outset, the achievements awarded by the jury have shared common values over time: they are part of a quest for innovation, carry noble usage values, in dialogue with their environment and their history. »
"For tile manufacturers, the Competition is a moment of precious exchanges with architects whose outlook and expectations are sources of reflection, research and innovation" adds Jean-Baptiste Fayet.
A competition to highlight the diversity of use and the modernity of the Terracotta Tile
“Over the course of a decade, new uses have developed: more low slopes, passage from the roof to the facade, complex shapes... The palette of colors is now very wide, from natural and nuanced colors to renderings matt or shiny white or black, enamelled and varnished, not to mention custom-made creations…” notes Jean-Baptiste Fayet who pursues : "The modernity of terracotta also means responding to the sustainable challenges that are imposed on builders: it is durable over time, made with a natural raw material, geo-sourced, renewable, recyclable".
10 years and 5 awards that reflect the evolution of our ways of living
The awards also reflect changes in our ways of living at home and together, with our family, our neighbours, our links with the landscape, with the environment, with the present and the past.
“The winning projects are all creators of a new harmony and link with their environment, guarantee of integration into a site. Over the years, it is less the strong architectural gesture that seduces the jury than projects that affirm something very symbolic reminding us that the primary function of architecture is to shelter us” concludes Anne-Sophie Kehr.
