LafargeHolcim supplies high performance concrete for the European XFEL laser in Germany

European XFEL generates extremely powerful X-ray flashes that are used by researchers around the world. Flashes produced in underground tunnels allow scientists to map the atomic details of viruses, film chemical reactions, and study the internal processes of the planets.

LafargeHolcim, through its local subsidiary Holcim Deutschland, supplied special concretes for the construction of the important underground tunnel system, in particular heavy concrete, easy to pump, used for radiation protection, and concrete suitable for the seabed.

LafargeHolcim engineers have also developed specific concrete solutions for European XFEL. The latter responded to the manufacturer's request to reduce the quantities of aluminum, natrum, silica and magnesium, which are usually present in concrete and which could have interfered with the very fine measurements made by the laser. Certain solutions have therefore required special limestone aggregates to reach particularly low silica levels. The Group carried out, with the manufacturer, in-depth chemical and physical tests on each concrete mix to guarantee very high quality levels for the project.

LafargeHolcim has also developed an integrated logistics solution for European XFEL, ensuring that deliveries comply with strict regulations in terms of traffic, dust and noise pollution.
