In Toulouse, the University of Mirail and its campus are undergoing a transformation of exceptional magnitude, with the partial reconstruction of the site. An architectural and urban project that we owe to the agency Valode & Pistre architects, winner with the Toulouse agency Cardete Huet who ensures its execution. The program provides for the reconstruction of 130 m000 of interior spaces and the redevelopment of 2 m23 of exterior spaces. "A project that fits into the requalification and enhancement of the Mirail district," said Alain Nègre, architect architect at Valode & Pistre.
Daylight
Conceptually, the architects have chosen, among other things, to group together in one building three UFRs (Training and Research Units) comprising classrooms, teaching offices and the resource center. A set of 200 meters long on three levels. This raises the question of the lighting of the premises, the project of course including all the issues of energy saving and natural contributions: "In the right of the double height halls, we have provided an overhead light entrance, via a canopy ".
Aesthetic finesse
The designers therefore worked on the creation of a custom canopy, then the VELUX company offered them an alternative solution of VELUX modular canopies, double with a slight slope: "Their proposal was very interesting and had several advantages", recalls Alain Negro. In particular the fineness of the uprights and the total integration of the smoke exhaust vents: "There is no difference between opening frames and fixed frames, it is very aesthetic". Equally important to the designers, the treatment of the fifth facade.
Again with its fine amounts, the canopy integrates perfectly and very aesthetically to the roof. Same satisfaction for the glazing: “The quality of the glass allowed us to get rid of the sunshades originally planned. There is no risk of overheating, ”concludes the architect.

"We avoid the risk of leaks"
“We are in a PPP * context with project maintenance for thirty years. In addition to the fact that they respond by the finesse of their uprights to the aesthetics that we were looking for, VELUX modular skylights reassure us in terms of maintenance. Indeed, by offering us an industrialized structure that integrates all the elements of the canopy (module, sealing connections, fixing system), we avoid the risk of leaks. "

"Two canopies in a week, four"
“It's a very nice product, well finished. But for us installers, the most important thing is the ease and speed of installation. VELUX supplies all the elements and accessories accompanied by technical drawings and installation instructions. In Toulouse, we installed the two canopies in a week to four, which is very, very, fast. This is important, so the building is out of water within a limited time. "
