Primal Craft trend: between back to basics and the future

The Danish trend office SPOTT Trends presents the Primal Craft trend, an association of subtle reds, a warm extension of gray and neutrals, added to ideas of textile and community craftsmanship, rusticity, modernity, all enhanced by inspirations from of the planet Mars. Clay, rope, bricks, stone, wire, paper, gravel, earth or even leather differentiate this trend, as well as a range of colors from another world. “Primal Craft is a homecoming, at an early stage of development, but for the future,” explains Anja Bisgaard Gade, Trend Spotter and CEO of SPOTT Trends.

The Crafted Series collection by the Milliken flooring brand is responding to this trend. It is updated with a new design and twelve new colourways - elegant neutrals, mid tones inspired by nature, and features of luminosity - and combines the nostalgia of the handmade with the power of modern technology: what SPOTT Trends calls the “craft techniques of the future”. “It's about using old craft knowledge and modernizing it.

For example, we see occurrences in the construction of larger houses that use 3D printing with materials similar to clay, ”continues Anja Bisgaard Gade. This meeting point between rusticity and technology really constitutes the heart of this trend.

The place of the planet Mars can be explained by the renewed interest in the exploration of the planet, but also the search for solutions to inhabit an environment where the only resource is red clay. “This inspiration led to the tonal colors of terracotta red,” says SPOTT Trends.

The Crafted Series collection draws its inspiration from the renaissance of the artisan movement, which places it in perfect alignment with the trend identified by SPOTT Trends. At the same time, the designs, colors and primary patterns of the tiles offer the designer endless possibilities of associations, thanks to basic, simple shapes, which widely open the field of possibilities.
