The works initiated by SPIE in August 2019 on the site of the company's new logistics center should be completed soon. This contract was awarded to SPIE GfT, a subsidiary of SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa based in Essen.
In Karlstein am Main, Bavaria, BMZ Group develops and manufactures, among other activities, high-tech battery systems intended to equip a wide range of products from world-renowned manufacturers, including electric vehicles. The prime contractor for these two projects is LIST Bau, with which SPIE has already collaborated in the past.
High requirements for the fire alarm system
BMZ Group has decided to build a new production hall in addition to the two existing ones in Karlstein, as well as a new logistics center including a high-rack warehouse for batteries. This center is unique in Germany. SPIE is responsible for the complete installation of the electrical infrastructure, power cables and distribution systems to network connections, not only in the new battery assembly center, but also in the new logistics center.
The multi-technical service provider also installs computer network cables, audio and video systems, and complex fire alarm devices. “In the event of a fire, it is difficult to extinguish the fire at the batteries; the required fire alarm system must meet very strict requirements. In addition to the installation of fire alarm devices on the hall ceilings at a height of 20 meters, we equip all of the high-rise racks with a smoke evacuation system (EFC) that constantly monitors the air in search possible variations. This makes it possible to detect smoke particles in a few seconds and trigger the alarm immediately. In total, we are laying 3,5 km of smoke evacuation pipes. Explains Baki Aslan, project manager at SPIE GfT, the entity responsible for executing the contract.
The concept of the fire alarm system has been previously approved by the firefighters. Baki Aslan: “We also install, among other things, 4 km of fire alarm cables, 35 km of data transmission cables, 60 km of various electrical cables and 150 smoke detectors in offices and common areas, as well as 300 lamps in the whole complex. "
The logistics center being located on the edge of an ornithological reserve, its night lighting meets specific requirements: “Of the 27 lighting poles that we install, only a third operates from a certain time, so as not to disturb the local fauna. However, there should be sufficient lighting during the rotation of the teams ”, underlines the project manager.
Efficient collaboration and environmentally friendly operation
Following the evolution of requirements during the project, SPIE took charge of additional services being deployed in the logistics center. Baki Aslan specifies: “We introduce many new solutions for the customer and suggest improvements for efficient operation. We interact regularly with the client in order to work out optimal solutions together and to react quickly and constructively to new situations. " During peak periods, the project manager is present on site with a team of nearly 20 employees. "After the successful completion of work in the new battery assembly center, we are now focusing on completing the works in the high-bay warehouse, so that the batteries produced can be optimally stored there", specifies Baki Aslan.
