Vinci wins nuclear dismantling contract in Sweden

The work will mobilize up to 400 people and will involve the dismantling, control and sorting of more than 30.000 tonnes of materials from the buildings of the two reactors, including radioactive elements, Vinci said.

The Ringhals nuclear power plant, located 60 km south of Gothenburg (southwest of Sweden), belongs to the Swedish energy groups Vattenfall with 70,4% and Sydkraft Nuclear Power with 29,6%. The work will be carried out by Nuvia Nordic AB, a local subsidiary of Vinci.

Ringhals reactors 1 and 2 were permanently closed in 2019 and 2020. These are the last two units closed in Sweden as part of the nuclear phase-out policy of the center-left coalition in power until November 2022. Six reactors were shut down in total between 1999 and 2020.

Nuclear energy provided 29% of the electricity consumed in the country in 2022.

Six reactors remain in operation in Sweden, where the new right-wing and far-right ruling coalition plans to restart a nuclear program.

In 2022, Vinci had already won a contract to dismantle the large elements of the primary circuit of one of the two closed units of the Ringhals power plant.

In France, Nuvia, a 100% subsidiary of Vinci, worked on the dismantling operations of nuclear installations, notably in Creys-Malville (Isère), in Chooz (Ardennes) and on the installations of the Atomic Energy Commission and for alternative energies (CEA) in Marcoule (Gard).
