A couple of architects design the Victory Bay House, a luxurious house located on a South Carolina island

This house stands out with its powerful horizontal lines and large wooden panels. A couple of architects recently completed the Victory Bay House, a luxurious home bathed in light, characterized by numerous lines and large wooden panels, located on a barrier island in South Carolina.

This expansive private residence was designed and built by Chelsea and Matt Anderson. Owners of Habitable Form and Maghwa Luxury Homes respectively, the Andersons enjoy working together as a design and construction team, from project design to delivery.

The Victory Bay House is a custom home that highlights the versatility of the Kebony Clear cladding that adorns it. Horizontal, straight and refined lines, as well as wooden panels, are deployed across its entire facade, including on the garage doors, camouflaged in the cladding. An exterior staircase, located at one of the front corners of the property, is also framed with wooden slats, which allows the light entering the house to be directed according to the time of day.

Designed to capture the ocean breeze from the other side of the park, the first floor social space is revealed behind large folding doors to become a vast covered porch that lets the outside in. The entire facade is clad in Kebony modified wood.

The site only offered a small construction area, in order to protect the century-old oak trees living nearby. This constraint called for a vertical design, while maintaining a narrow form that would let in air and natural light. The ocean breeze comes from the southwest, and the architecture of the house is designed to take advantage of it.

The retired owner couple wanted a place to gather their children and grandchildren. They wanted the house to provide enough space for this purpose, without being too large when only they occupied it. Each of the three bedrooms is fully insulated to guarantee acoustic privacy. The second floor suite is also isolated. Private exterior access allows it to be closed when not in use, or to give independence to its users.

The home was a winner of the 2022 Robert Mills Residential Award, awarded by AIA South Carolina. “Guests wanted to retreat to the shade of oak trees and large porches,” said Chelsea Anderson, AIA.
