Six out of ten buildings in Tehran do not comply with seismic standards and risk suffering major damage in the event of a major earthquake, Hamchahri reported on Wednesday, the daily newspaper of the Iranian capital city hall.
"Sixty percent of buildings do not meet earthquake-resistant standards and will be seriously damaged, and 20% completely destroyed in the event of an earthquake of magnitude 6,5 on the Richter scale," writes the newspaper, citing Réza Karami-Mohammadi, director of the Municipality's Risk Prevention and Management Organization.
Mr. Karami-Mohammadi made these remarks during a meeting of the municipal council during which he pleaded for a renovation in the oldest built areas of the capital "as soon as possible" in order to limit the damage in the event of an earthquake.
Located on the borders of several tectonic plates and crossed by several faults, Iran is an area of strong seismic activity.
The metropolitan area of Tehran has more than nine million inhabitants.
In May 2020, a moderate earthquake of magnitude 4,6, whose epicenter was located 55 km from the capital, left one dead and more than twenty injured.
