Did you know that for a long time, fairs were held on the forecourt of the Town Hall, then called Place de Grève? And that, in the 1970s, cars drove around in large numbers on the square, which has now been transformed into an urban forest?
In this excerpt from a 1969 documentary by "Histoires de Paris" about the now-named Esplanade de la Libération, we step back in time. Through numerous old engravings and archive videos, we revisit the most well-known events that took place there, and the different faces of the Hôtel de Ville and its square under the Ancien Régime, and then during and after the Revolution.
