Can fireplaces, symbols of rustic charm and conviviality, become an asset for the energy transition? Laurent Permasse, Director of Sofinco Eco-Transitions, was a guest on Sud Radio to discuss the solutions and regulations needed to (re)concile sustainable development and fireplaces.
Winter evenings by the fire are a cherished tradition in France. However, in the context of the energy transition, traditional fireplaces, often open hearths, are raising questions about their efficiency and ecological impact. While wood is a renewable resource with a low carbon footprint, open fireplaces have limited energy efficiency (less than 15%) and emit significant amounts of fine particles.
To make your home more eco-friendly without sacrificing the pleasure of an evening by the fire, opt instead for inserts, wood-burning stoves or closed fireplaces, which offer higher energy efficiency, up to 80%.
All the more reason to swap your traditional fireplace for one of these wood-burning heating methods: since October 2024, several major cities, such as Lyon and Grenoble, have banned open fireplaces. And to finance the purchase and installation of a more efficient heating system, solutions exist, including government aid, community assistance, and consumer credit.
