Construction work on an occupied site: recycling can no longer wait until the end of the construction project

One issue, however, is too often relegated to the background: the management of construction waste.

On the one hand, construction companies are making ambitious environmental commitments. On the other hand, on the ground, practices remain largely rooted in an outdated model: small skips, mixed waste streams, and sorting relegated to the end of the line, if it even exists. On occupied sites, this model quickly reveals its limitations: clutter, nuisances, safety constraints, and, above all, the impossibility of effective sorting at the source. Waste becomes invisible in the site's organization, even though it is a key indicator.

Waiting until the end of construction to address recycling is no longer compatible with current requirements. Regulatory obligations are becoming more stringent, occupants' expectations are evolving, and the image of sites is directly impacted by how construction projects are managed. In occupied buildings, source separation is no longer optional.

During the renovation of a staff restaurant at a luxury hotel while the premises remained occupied, this issue arose very concretely. The constrained environment made the installation of conventional skips impossible, while simultaneously requiring a high level of control, traceability, and reporting of waste flows.

Waste management was therefore considered from the outset as an integral part of the construction project. A mobile sorting station, installed as close as possible to the work areas, enabled source separation despite the limited space and continued activity. Organized waste flow, team training, and adapted collection schedules made the system clear and operational on a daily basis.

This approach generated a significant productivity gain. The cleaning phase, initially planned for two weeks, was completed in four days. The proximity of the sorting area limited back-and-forth trips, streamlined work processes, and reduced manual handling, also helping to decrease the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.

The result: a recycling rate of 84%, exceeding the initial target of 80%, consistent sorting across all waste streams, and complete traceability ensured through registers, photos, and regular reporting. Without disrupting operations, waste management has become a genuine driver of organizational improvement and environmental performance.

Planning waste management upstream allows for better structuring of the construction site, clarification of uses, and reduced friction between construction and operations. Modular solutions, such as big bags, then become essential: sorting from the production stage, reduced bulk, minimized nuisances, and improved material recovery, provided they are part of a comprehensive and controlled system.

Beyond the equipment, a shift in perspective is taking place. Waste is no longer simply residue to be disposed of, but a site issue in its own right, revealing the coherence between CSR rhetoric and operational reality.

Visible to occupants, clients, and partners, a construction site on an occupied site becomes a showcase. A clean, legible, and well-organized construction site concretely embodies environmental commitments.

The question is no longer whether it is possible to reconcile renovation, comfort and recycling. The solutions exist, the channels are in place.

In occupied sites, more so than elsewhere, recycling can no longer wait for the completion of construction work.
