David versus Goliath: the economic battle we prefer not to see

Today, it's not slingshots that are lacking for the "Davids" of entrepreneurship, but the rules of the game themselves. All over the world, small and medium-sized enterprises are facing economic Goliaths that are not only bigger: they are better protected, better equipped, and often better treated by the systems they claim to serve.

Large companies have structural advantages that no one seriously disputes anymore. They benefit from legal teams capable of optimizing every decision from a tax perspective, influential lobbying services that shape regulations to their advantage, and access to almost unlimited financing, while smaller companies struggle to convince a bank at the slightest economic setback.

Where a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) struggles to obtain credit, payment extensions, or government support, large corporations receive preferential financing, targeted sectoral aid, and sometimes even bailouts in times of crisis. When a small business faces difficulties, it often disappears into oblivion. When a large corporation falters, the government intervenes in the name of “the public interest.”

This unequal treatment creates a dangerous distortion. It stifles local innovation, weakens regional ecosystems, and concentrates ever more economic power in the hands of a few. Yet, it is precisely medium-sized enterprises and SMEs that create the bulk of jobs, sustain local communities, and champion a humane and responsible entrepreneurial vision.

This paradox can be observed on a daily basis: human-sized companies demonstrate that they can be efficient, innovative and sustainable, but they must do so on a structurally unbalanced playing field.

The real challenge is not to pit “big” against “small” on principle. It is to rebalance the rules so that competition is truly fair. This requires bolder public policies, fairer taxation, and regulations that protect the diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem rather than entrenching de facto monopolies.

If we want a vibrant, resilient economy that creates shared value, it's time to give David another chance. Not out of romanticism, but out of realism: without him, Goliath rests on his laurels, and everyone pays the price.
