While its eco-friendly benefits in terms of durability and insulation, along with its aesthetic and warm qualities, make it indispensable, it also requires good practices to be implemented from the very beginning of a project. Without protection, graying, soiling, cracking, warping, and even rotting, in some cases, will be the inevitable evolution of wooden supports.
Why and how does wood age?
Water and sun, the two enemies of wood
Water: causes the wood to swell and then deflate when it evaporates. Under the effects of humidity variations, it can crack and split. Water is also one of the driving forces that feeds all the insects and fungi that can attack and invade the wood.
The sun: by destroying the lignin in wood, UV rays cause it to turn gray prematurely and even crack.
Please note: the stronger the sun, the more the wood will age prematurely, that is to say, turn white, gray, and even crack.
Solutions to make wood last: protect and maintain
To prevent damage, it is essential to maintain and protect exterior wood. Maintenance = cleaning = understanding the wood's needs.
Analyze the condition of the wood
A quick reminder of good cleaning practices:
- If the wood is gray, dull and simply dirty, left to the elements: it must be stripped
- If the wood is blackened, deeply soiled with encrusted oils, having baked in the sun: it must be de-oiled.
- When the support is covered with an old film-forming finish: it must be stripped.
The choice of protection
Saturators: as their name suggests, saturate, that is to say they impregnate the wood in depth to protect it durably without the risk of flaking.
Oils: provide a warm finish but can darken under UV rays and stain the wood.
Stains: leave a film on the surface that is resistant to UV rays but will tend to flake off over time.
Pro tips for getting through time
Durieu and its Owatrol® range favor saturators which provide a particularly suitable solution for protecting all types of wood, notably thanks to their impregnation qualities.
Focus on a differentiating finish
AQUATROL® BIOSOURCED is a solution that combines the advantages of a water-based saturator with those of a solvent-based saturator. Its new 62% biosourced formula, coupled with its water-based mode, makes it a unique finish.
How: a solvent-based saturator is very impregnating thanks to its oils which combine with those of the wood to create a sort of formidable protective shield indoors against aging.
A water-based saturator also penetrates the wood without leaving a film and benefits from resins which give the wood solid resistance to bad weather.
By incorporating high-quality oils and resins, the formulation of AQUATROL® BIOSOURCED offers a perfect synergy for optimal protection. It provides the wood with the shield of oils and the protection of resins.
Its advantages
Thanks to the oils in its composition, AQUATROL® BIOSOURCED nourishes old wood in depth and gives it great resistance to continue to last.
Its unique composition also allows it to be applied in a single coat, on a new structure or on low-absorbency wood, while guaranteeing optimal protection.
Its gel formula makes its application particularly simple and pleasant.
New wood and renovation
In renovation mode, it makes a difference in terms of rendering. Indeed, it becomes possible to recover the aging effects that create color gradients. Simply apply a little more product where the color has particularly faded to obtain a perfectly uniform finish.
It offers 7 modern and luminous shades with an unparalleled warm invigorating finish for a water-based finish.
Owatrol® in action and biosourced
For the finishing of this project, the Durieu teams recommended colorless AQUATROL® BIOSOURCÉ because the owners wanted a natural and resistant finish for this cladding.
AQUATROL® BIOSOURCED is one of the rare Owatrol® finishes to offer a colorless finish, and in this case, the large roof overhang made the project reasonable because it limited the impact of UV rays and the effects of bad weather. The Douglas fir structure had never been protected for 6 years and was previously cleaned and degreased with NET-TROL®200.
