Plastic pallet or wooden pallet: how to choose for your workshop or garage?

In a workshop or garage, pallets aren't just for preparing shipments. They can also facilitate the storage of materials, protect certain goods from the floor, or allow for the movement of loads using a pallet jack or forklift. However, wooden and plastic models serve different purposes.

Wooden pallets: a common and economical solution

Widely used in transport and logistics, wooden pallets are primarily attractive due to their generally affordable price. Robust and sturdy, they are suitable for storing a wide variety of materials, boxes, equipment, or mechanical parts. They can also be repaired when only a few boards are damaged.

Wood, however, presents certain limitations. Sensitive to humidity, it can warp or deteriorate when stored for extended periods in a damp environment or directly exposed to the elements. Splinters, exposed nails, or broken boards can also appear during handling. Regular inspection is therefore necessary before loading or moving the pallet.

For a dry garage, a small workshop, or an occasional need, wooden pallets remain a practical option. They are particularly suitable when purchase price is the main criterion or when the pallets are unlikely to be returned after shipping.

The plastic pallet: easy to clean and moisture-resistant

Its surface does not absorb moisture and does not generate splinters or protruding nails. It can therefore facilitate the maintenance of storage areas and reduce certain risks of damage to packaging.

However, its purchase price is often higher than that of a wooden model. In the event of significant damage, repair can also be difficult, or even impossible. Its economic value therefore depends on the number of times it is expected to be reused and the actual conditions of use.

Take into account the load and the handling method

The material shouldn't be the only factor considered. Before purchasing, it's essential to check the pallet's dimensions and the maximum loads specified by the manufacturer. The capacity can vary depending on whether the pallet is placed on the ground, moved, or installed on shelving.

It's also essential to check its compatibility with the equipment available in the workshop or garage: manual pallet jack, stacker, or forklift. The number of entry points, the presence of skids, and the deck shape directly influence ease of handling and load stability. Furthermore, not all pallets are designed to be placed at height on a rack.

Choose according to actual use

Wooden pallets are generally suitable for occasional use, limited budgets, and storage in a dry environment. Plastic pallets become particularly relevant when the pallet needs to be handled frequently, cleaned, or exposed to moisture.

In both cases, the choice must be based on a concrete analysis of the loads, frequency of use, and available space. A suitable pallet improves workshop organization, but it also helps to secure storage and handling operations.
