Based on the results of an impact study conducted during the 2022 edition, the BATIMAT, INTERCLIMA and IDEOBAIN trade shows, organized from September 30 to October 3, 2024, will deploy concrete, varied and targeted actions. These actions focus on 3 essential items: travel of exhibitors and visitors, purchases of goods and services, waste management, etc. Objective: to continue their commitment to net 0 carbon by 2040. Beyond the carbon impact, an economic and social axis will be addressed during and after the event: the Mondial du Bâtiment 2024 having committed itself as a partner of the first Téléthon du Bâtiment.
The responsibility of exemplarity
The building and construction sector is a major contributor to CO2 emissions (145 million tonnes per year in France). As the leading emitter of CO2, tied with transport, the sector is therefore an absolute priority in the success of the country's decarbonisation. Aware of the challenges to be met collectively, the Mondial du Bâtiment implemented a voluntary strategy in 2022 to be part of this approach. This is a major challenge for a trade show of this magnitude. The 2024 edition is taking a further step by initiating new virtuous measures and setting ambitious objectives. To this end, the organisation wishes to set an example and raise awareness among all its stakeholders of the need for these issues, exhibitors, visitors, partners and teams.
Lessons from 2022
During the 2022 edition, the Mondial du Bâtiment established a concrete inventory to assess the real impact of the event, in a transparent approach based on measurable indicators. To help target the improvements to be implemented as part of the 2024 edition, three priority items were studied to determine the true orders of magnitude of emissions:
- Travel by exhibitors and visitors: this represented 81% of the carbon footprint. Travel by visitors alone accounted for 51% of the emissions in the overall assessment. 86% of visitors and 57% of exhibitors came from France. It was estimated that 14% of emissions were linked to car use.
- Inputs: these are the purchases of goods and services necessary for the installation and operation of the show: equipment rented to exhibitors, equipment for common areas, stands, hotels and meals for visitors and exhibitors. In 2022, they generated 17% of the carbon footprint and 56% were related to the stands and 13% to the equipment rented to exhibitors.
- Waste generated: the quantities of waste in 2022 were estimated at 589 tonnes, of which 99% are mixed household waste, wood, carpet, catalogues, cardboard.
Actions implemented for the 2024 edition
Based on these observations, the Mondial du Bâtiment 2024 is continuing its action and going further in the decarbonization of the event by implementing various measures on the three identified areas of improvement.
- Travel of exhibitors and visitors
- Organization and financing of group transport: provision of a bus system within a 300 km radius around Paris and train journeys for visitors' travel.
- Implementation of a unique carpooling system via the platform https://covoiturage.mondialdubatiment.com/ where visitors can offer journeys or book a carpool to get to the Mondial du Bâtiment on the day of their choice.
- Promotion of low-carbon energy modes of transport and soft mobility, such as the train, metro or tram.
- Optimization of assembly logistics to group together flows linked to the transport of stands and exhibition materials.
- Inputs
- Removal of carpet in most aisles and Pavilions. This measure would potentially save 24 tonnes of carpet.
- Establishment of only five stand sizes, with a maximum of 99 m2 per exhibiting company, to put an end to excessive exhibition spaces.
- Promotion of eco-responsible stands proposed by the organization. Half of the exhibitors opted for the latter. The materials used are recycled (carpets, partition coverings, signage, etc.), recovered (wood) and reused (partitions, LED bulbs, doors, furniture). The reception areas are also made of wood labeled "Bois de France".
- Promoting responsible catering, i.e. prepared with local and seasonal products.
- Waste generated by the show:
- Optimization of waste sorting and recovery rate, in partnership with RE UP
- Circularity encouraged
- Optimized reuse of materials and decorations
Decarbonization on the agenda of the Mondial du Bâtiment
The subject of decarbonization will obviously be in the spotlight during the four days of the Mondial du Bâtiment through conferences, speaking spaces, not forgetting the Innovation Awards for which decarbonization and the CSR approach were particularly valued criteria during the deliberations of the juries.
In addition, a public prize will be awarded to the most eco-responsible exhibitor during the show.
Unprecedented events
- Climate Sense (exterior of Pavilion 1)
BATIMAT will host Climate Sense, a unique immersive experience imagined by Christian Clot, explorer-researcher, Founder and CEO of the Human Adaptation Institute. It is a climate chamber designed to simulate a space and life situations that allow visitors to understand the realities of life at +50°C. Visitors, immersed for 30 minutes in these conditions, can thus concretely understand the impacts of extreme climates on the human body and health, social organizations and the planet. A series of "explanatory bubbles" accompany the device to provide elements of understanding and avenues for reflection.
- The Art of Waste (Pavilion 1 – Near the Main Arena)
The BATIMAT show will exhibit a selection of works of art made from recycled elements from some exhibiting companies. This initiative will not only enrich the show's scenography, but is also a way of promoting recycling and sustainability. Because waste can have a thousand lives, and some artists have understood this well. The exhibition will show pieces from the Sabrina Lucas gallery in Nantes, which specializes in consulting, support and the production of tailor-made works of art for industries, using their own waste. This approach can be part of the decarbonization strategy of many companies, by involving and promoting the work of employees on the one hand, and by offering artists access to sometimes expensive materials, such as steel or wood on the other hand. In addition, the creation of a work of art in a company is tax deductible. It allows you to deduct up to 60% of the expenses related to this investment from your taxes, and it is part of the social and environmental responsibility (CSR) policy. Find it in Pavilion 1 near the Arena Principale.
Dorémi, a social and solidarity economy company and Qualiopi-certified training organization, will offer 20 practical workshops on the efficient renovation of individual homes. On a 60 m2 stand equipped with 2 technical platforms and a materials library, visitors will be able to gain a comprehensive understanding of energy renovation: dual-flow ventilation system, summer and winter comfort, airtightness, water vapor migration, roofing, etc. To be found in Pavilion 1 in the RENODAYS by BATIMAT area.
- The Energy Insecurity Fresco (Stand H1-L10)

BATIMAT supports the Telethon
BATIMAT is a partner of the first edition of the "Telethon de la Filière du Bâtiment", which will be organized on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the Emile Anthoine stadium, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Objective: run and move for the benefit of the AFM-Telethon and in particular its Institute of Myology, a center of expertise dedicated to the science and medicine of muscle and its diseases. The funds raised will be used, in particular, to open a new building within the Salpêtrière hospital.
The BATIMAT exhibition, which will open its doors from September 30 to October 3, will provide the Téléthon with a stand to enable it to present the approach, welcome candidates and participate in various key moments such as speaking engagements in the conference program and the program of broadcasts produced by Bati-Radio.
