The Radius Group has deployed Potain's first ever MR 229 luffing jib tower crane for a real estate project on the Greenwich Peninsula in London, UK.
Ideal for high-rise and confined sites, the MR 229 offers a maximum capacity of 14 t, boom lengths of 30 to 55 m, the choice between two high-performance winches and a reduced out-of-service radius.
The MR 229 is also Potain's first luffing jib crane to feature Manitowoc's CCS operating system and the Potain CONNECT telematics platform. It thus opens the way to a new generation of luffing jib cranes from Potain.
Three Potain MR 225 A cranes were deployed for this same project and will be managed, operated and dismantled by the Radius group once their mission is accomplished by the fourth quarter of 2025.
The Radius Group had already selected four Potain MR 225 A cranes for the project, based on a required capacity of 2,15t at full span, but increasing demand for efficiency prompted the company to replace the one of the MR 225 A cranes by an MR 229 as soon as it is made available.
The MR 229 is Potain's first luffing jib crane to feature Manitowoc's Crane Control System (CCS), which helps get work done faster and more precisely. With CCS, it takes just 15 minutes to configure the crane, calibrate the crane motion sensors, and adjust the trolley limit switch and boom length.
The MR 229 is also the first to benefit from the new Potain CONNECT telematics system, which streamlines daily tasks, allows efficient fleet management and optimizes servicing and maintenance.
For Teddy Holt, director of operations for the Radius group: “Innovation has always been critical for the Radius Group, and this milestone is particularly exciting for us. Being the first lifting service provider in the world to erect an MR 229 on an ongoing construction site is another perfect example of our drive for continuous improvement, which makes Radius a major player in the lifting sector. »
Potain's MR 229 offers a maximum capacity of 14t, boom lengths between 30m and 55m and an impressive boom tip capacity of 2,7t at full reach. Another important feature for congested job sites is the short out-of-service radius of just 10m or 12m depending on boom length. The crane also has the choice of two brand new high-performance lifting winches: the 75HPL35 and the 110HPL35. For the Greenwich Peninsula project it was configured with a 50m jib and 37,5m hook height and is fitted with a 75HLP35 winch. The three other Potain MR 225 A cranes were configured with 40 m jibs.
The Radius group will support these cranes throughout the project, from logistics, assembly, operation and until their dismantling. One of the key advantages of the chosen cranes is that they can assemble and disassemble each other, saving costs for mobile cranes during assembly and dismantling operations. The cranes will remain in service until the 4th quarter of 2025, with the project expected to end in 2027.
Radius Group is a partner of NFT, owner of the largest fleet of tower cranes in the world. Radius has access to NFT's entire fleet, which is constantly growing and today includes more than 3.000 tower cranes, with a range of modern distributor jib cranes from 178 to 3200 mt and lifting boom from 160 to 650 mt.
