Protect, beautify, magnify, perpetuate: the axioms of Durieu Groupe
Wood species
How to find it?
We can simplify the classification of wood into 3 categories:
- Soft woods, often conifers (larch, pine, Red Cedar, etc.), are porous woods which require rich, filling protection combining with the wood fibers to protect it in depth, effectively and sustainably.
- Hard woods, which are difficult to impregnate (such as chestnut, oak, etc.), require a product that penetrates the wood and then impregnates it deeply to ensure its longevity.
- Exotic woods have very fine and tight pores and it is very difficult to penetrate protection into these woods. It is therefore imperative to have a very targeted solution to adapt to this density.
What type of wood for what support?
Different functions, specific requirements:
- Soft woods are more often used for exterior vertical supports: cladding, shutters, etc. These species are easier to work with for cladding than less “flexible” hardwoods. In addition, not being in direct confrontation with rainwater and UV rays, they will suffer less from their attacks and although less durable than other species, they will resist well vertically. They are sometimes also less expensive.
- Hardwoods are more intended for the wooden parts of the interior habitat: stairs, parquet flooring, doors, paneling... also for shutters. Their density and stability makes them last for intensive use provided the right finish is applied.
- Exotic woods, originally intended for boat decks due to their resistance to harsh climatic conditions, have moved to dry land and are generally used for terraces and sometimes certain parquet floors or interior works due to their good longevity. Their density and appearance are ideal for these structures which undergo intensive outdoor use and direct climatic attacks, while offering a beautiful aesthetic.
What solutions to last?
Plan Your Visit
Before thinking about protecting you must prepare to work on a clean support, that is to say:
- Clean or sober it up if it is dirty: it will regain its shine.
- Remove oil if it is dirty: to dissolve the grease that clogs the wood.
- Strip if necessary: to remove old, very film-forming protections or those encrusted in the support.
Owatrol® preparation solutions
With its new 89% biosourced formula, easily biodegradable, effectiveness intact, even more responsible.
- NET-TROL®400 for de-oiling
- DILUNETT®PRO for stripping
Please note: after de-oiling or stripping, it is ABSOLUTELY necessary to stabilize the support with a pass of NET-TROL®200 in order to ensure the hold of the finish which will come next. This final step also allows you to lighten the wood a little more to restore its shine.
Protect
Once clean, the wood is finally ready to receive protection!
Understand the different protection options and make the right choice: stain, oil or saturate?
Stains protect against aging by leaving a film on the surface. They are often used for cladding in mountains, given their good performance. However, their film eventually flakes and must be stripped before carrying out maintenance. They should never be used on a terrace.
Oils give a warm appearance to wood and are generally also applied to cladding but they can darken under the effect of UV and water and clog the wood. It must be stripped at the time of maintenance.
The saturators impregnate and enter the wood to protect it in depth. The warm appearance and grain of the wood is preserved, there is no film on the surface and maintenance is simplified because there is no need to strip, a simple cleaning is enough. Saturators are increasingly used for cladding and for a long time on terraces.
The Owatrol® range from Durieu offers saturators with high-performance impregnation qualities which make them benchmarks for making supports last.
PROTEXT®, a saturator for all woods
- PROTEXT® provides total water-based protection, perfect for all woods, particularly hardwoods.
It combines 3 technologies, bringing together 3 resins which work together to provide the wood with exceptional impregnation and exceptional durability qualities.
It also allows you to magnify and preserve the beautiful aesthetic of Red Cedar structures.
- Reinforced UV protection to ensure truly optimal wood durability.
- Hygrometry regulator: once applied, PROTEXT® prevents water from entering the wood, while allowing the water vapor that is naturally created to escape.
SOLID COLOR STAIN®, a decorative opaque solution for low maintenance
SOLID COLOR STAIN® offers a hybrid solution halfway between stain and saturator. Composed of high-performance alkyd resins, SCS impregnates the wood to deeply nourish it. Like a saturator, its action does not stop at the surface of the wood but brings its protection inside to make it last. A finish that breathes: the flexible SCS film becomes one with the support and allows it to adapt to the deformations of the wood due to hygrometric variations, thus ensuring the longevity of the work.
- Thanks to the flexibility of its SCS film, it does not crack under the effects of bad weather and temperature variations which can deform the wood. This is the ideal response in areas where the climate varies or which experience strong thermal amplitudes.
- The excellence of its pigments gives it increased UV resistance, a significant quality by the sea.
- Ultra resistant, the SCS film resists abrasion well and allows it to be applied without worry on horizontal surfaces such as terraces, roof tops, etc.
