From 2008 to 2022, the Chinese government has built state-of-the-art competition venues and facilities for the Summer and Winter Olympics. As the water pump is regarded as the important equipment of sports venues, Wilo, the world's leading manufacturer of water pumps and water pump systems, has also contributed to the Winter Olympics and Paralympics!
The National Speed Skating Oval "Ice Ribbon" is the landmark venue for the main competition area of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, and it is also the only newly constructed ice competition venue.
To get comprehensive coverage of all ice sports such as speed skating, short track speed skating, figure skating and ice hockey, the National Speed Skating Oval is designed as an all-in-one site. ice, covering an ice surface of 12 square meters, also the largest in Asia. The huge ice surface is made of the "most environmentally friendly material", the carbon dioxide refrigerant, setting a new benchmark for the Olympic Games in terms of environmental protection and sustainability.
Wilo supplies pumping solutions for the Capital Gymnasium
The Capital Gymnasium began renovations on November 16, 2018 and was officially completed on December 25, 2020. Built in 1968, it has been in operation for 53 years. Today, it has the capacity to host all short track speed skating and figure skating competitions, where a total of 14 gold medals are awarded.
Figure skating and short track speed skating require a different temperature and hardness for the ice floor, and this change must be effective within two hours. Faced with these requirements, the design team conducted extensive research and discussions with the Olympic Organizing Committee's ice-making experts, and ultimately adopted the new environmentally friendly transcritical carbon dioxide direct cooling technology. environment in the ice making system of the large ice rink, thus making ice quickly and evenly.
Thanks to advanced heat recovery facilities, heat is reused at the competition venue to heat water for watering the ice and rotating dehumidifiers, etc., thus realizing the use of waste heat and significantly reducing subsequent operating costs. When converting the surface temperature of the ice, the cooling power of the refrigeration unit is controlled in real time, thanks to the temperature sensor, while the ice is sprinkled with hot water to ensure the rapid ice surface temperature conversion.
Wilo demonstrated his extraordinary technical ability during the Beijing Winter Olympics, notably by contributing to the Capital Gymnasium reconstruction and extension project. Wilo supplied excellent water pump solutions for various Capital Gymnasium subsystems:
- Site dehumidification room, air conditioning direct injection unit room: 12 Wilo-GIGA N horizontal end-suction centrifugal pumps.
- Basement bathroom: 2 sewage lifting devices
- Sewage and ice melting installations for each engine room: 16 Wilo-FAG sewage submersible pumps; 7 Wilo-COR support control cabinets
National Snowmobile and Sledding Center
In addition to undertaking the above two Winter Olympics projects in the commercial building sector, Wilo China has also secured orders in the municipal water sector. In 2018, Wilo undertook the snow water diversion and centralized water supply project in the Yanqing competition area of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The Beijing Winter Olympics has three competition areas, and the Yanqing competition area is the one with the most new venues, and it is also considered the competition area with the shortest construction period, the hardest and highest level in the history of the Winter Olympics. There are two competition venues within the competition area: the National Alpine Ski Center and the National Snowmobile and Luge Center.
Both competition venues require a large volume of artificial ice and snowmaking services. The water source is mainly provided by Foyukou Reservoir in Yanqing District, which is adjacent to the competition area. Water is piped from the Foyukou Reservoir to a small reservoir inside the competition area via the pumping station outside the competition area, and then pumped to the holding tank via the pumping station. pumping. Finally, the three other pumping stations supply water to the snowmaking equipment in the competition area.
Wilo-RSPH segmented horizontal multistage pump, a product of Wilo's long-distance clear water transport series, is applied to the first-class water inlet pump station project for snowmaking and the water diversion and centralized water supply source in the Yanqing District of the Winter Olympics.
Wilo is supplying a total of 11 RSPH multistage pumps for this project. RSPH multistage pumps of various models have a maximum head of 499 m and a maximum flow of 430 m³/H h.
The Wilo-RSPH horizontal multistage centrifugal pump is an energy-efficient water pump.
Wilo has tested the performance of each pump extensively. The project requires a short construction period and an urgent delivery time. In less than five months, Wilo mobilizes all its departments to deliver the products on time, which proves Wilo's strength in the municipal water market.
