Where do people from the Paris region build their houses?

While only 29% of them made this choice in 2019, 43% now make this choice: Oise (60), Eure-et-Loir (28) and Eure (27) remain the most popular departments.

In 2024, 4.201 households in the Paris region had their house built, including:

• 2.406 chose to stay in Île-de-France (i.e. 57%);
• 1.795 preferred to move away from it (43%).

The main reason for the distance? The price and availability of land in the Île-de-France region, which can be a barrier for some households. By moving a little further away from this region, land can become more accessible, allowing for the construction of a house on a larger plot at a more affordable price.

Île-de-France, a region that is still very popular

Île-de-France remains the most popular region for residents of the Île-de-France region to build their homes. In 2024, 57% of them (2.406 households) will choose to stay there, with the top three departments being:

• Seine-et-Marne, for 635 households, or 26% (vs. 30% in 2023);
• Yvelines, for 524 households, or 22% (vs. 21% in 2023);
• Essonne, for 465 households, or 21% (vs. 19% in 2023);

These results remain equivalent to those of the previous year. The departments of Val d'Oise (95), Seine-Saint-Denis (93) and Val de Marne (94) come next, with 13%, 8% and 7% of the choices of Parisian residents respectively.

More and more people from the Paris region are moving away

Even though the Île-de-France region remains the most popular region for residents to build their homes, Domexpo highlights that more and more of them are choosing to move away from it: in 2024, this figure will be 43%, compared to only 29% five years ago...

The bordering departments, the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts remain the most popular areas:

• 28% favor the departments bordering Île-de-France. This area is particularly popular due to its proximity to Île-de-France, which makes it possible to maintain professional activity there. Improvements in public transport and teleworking continue to encourage this move away. The departments of Oise (60), Eure et Loir (28), and Eure (27) remain the three main host departments.
• 26% chose the Atlantic coast, with the top 3 departments of Vendée (85), Morbihan (56) and Charente-Maritime (17) (vs. 25% in 2023);
• The Mediterranean coast was chosen by 11% of future buyers, as in 2023. Var (83) and Hérault (34) remain the preferred departments.
