TotalEnergies signs a project to develop the production of green hydrogen in Morocco

Announced during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to Rabat, this contract allows "the launch of preliminary design studies", the press release states.

Located in southern Morocco in the Guelmin-Oued Noun region, on the Atlantic coast, the "Chbika" project aims to build "1 GW of onshore solar and wind capacities that will power the production of green hydrogen by electrolysis of desalinated seawater and its transformation into 200.000 tonnes per year of green ammonia for the European market", the document details.

"This project will constitute the first phase of a development program aimed at creating a world-scale green hydrogen production center," adds TotalEnergies.

The company TE H2, co-founded by Total and the EREN group, the Austrian leader in electricity, the Danish shipowner AP Møller and the investment company specializing in wind power Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners have joined forces for this "large-scale project".

"TE H2 and CIP will be responsible for developing the production of renewable energies (solar, wind, green hydrogen and its derivatives), while AP M øller Capital will develop the port and associated infrastructure," the press release reads.

Quoted in the press release, Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies, assures that "this agreement is part of our strategy to develop exportable production in Europe in countries with the most competitive renewable resources, such as Morocco."
