The forecourt of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, devastated two years ago by a fire, was temporarily closed to the public due to the excessive concentration of lead, the police headquarters (PP) said on Tuesday.
"The results of the last campaign of measurements revealed lead dust concentrations higher than the usual Parisian level (" background noise ") at certain points of the square", informs the PP in a press release.
The "background noise" of lead in Paris corresponds to the pollution independent of Notre-Dame.
After advice from the Regional Health Agency (ARS), the Prefect of Police Didier Lallement therefore issued an order prohibiting the movement of pedestrians and vehicles on the square, which however provides for a few crossing points around.
This closure will be lifted as soon as the forecourt is cleaned and "all the values recorded will have returned to a sufficiently low level", indicates the police headquarters.
Since the fire, "the square and the cathedral have been subject to continuous monitoring of the concentration of lead dust," recalls the PP.
The flames had melted several hundred tons of lead lying in the frame of the Gothic monument. Decontamination work had been carried out in several schools around the monument.
