The Getlink group, operator of the Channel Tunnel, announced on Tuesday 31 January the commissioning of new equipment improving the stability of its electricity network, which will make it possible to increase the number of trains passing through the tunnel.
Eurotunnel, the historic division of Getlink in charge of the tunnel, will be able to run up to eight trains per direction at the same time between France and England, i.e. 1.000 trains per day, against six trains per direction at the same time until present, Getlink said in a statement.
The new equipment, supplied by General Electric, required five years of research and cost 45 million euros, according to the group.
Getlink has long wanted to attract more rail operators to the tunnel, which is currently used by Eurostar high-speed trains, freight trains and its own shuttles carrying trucks and cars.
