The Paris Council asks to reduce the height of the Triangle Tower

The non-binding wish, presented by the ecologist Emile Meunier, requests that the City of Paris "implement all necessary means to develop the Triangle Tower project, in particular by reducing its height and increasing the proportion of housing ".

The Paris Council adopted it by 85 votes, including those of the four opposition groups (LR and related pro and anti-Dati, MoDem, Renaissance and Horizons) against 63 (PS and PCF).

The same groups had already joined forces in November 2021, in vain, to demand the abandonment of the project.

Under construction since February 2022, for a cost announced at the time of 660 million euros, the Triangle tower currently has 7 floors out of the 42 planned.

Planned mainly for offices, it should become in 2026, with a height of 180 m, the third tallest building in the capital, after the Eiffel and Montparnasse towers.

The project, launched in 2008, was validated in 2015 under the first mandate of Anne Hidalgo despite opposition from environmentalists.

“No one who is a little proud about ecology will be able to decently attend its inauguration,” criticized Emile Meunier, denouncing an “ecological absurdity”.

The elected official asked for the project to be overhauled and suggested reorienting it into "the largest hanging gardens since Babylon" based on the model of New York's "Ground Zero".

The first deputy Emmanuel Grégoire rejected a wish that was “impossible to implement”.

A reduction in the size of the tower "could only come from the lease holder", the shopping center giant Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), which has "no intention of giving up on an investment project which would cost hundreds of millions of euros,” added the town planning deputy.

The LR mayor of the 15th arrondissement Philippe Goujon explained that he supported a "slightly crazy" and "unrealistic" wish in order to prevent an "urban catastrophe".
