Spain exceeded 50% renewable electricity for the first time in 2023

According to Red Eléctrica Española (REE), renewable electricity production reached nearly 2023 gigawatts/hour in 135.000, or 50,4% of the national electricity mix.

This percentage, eight points higher than that of 2022 (42,2%), represents a "historic" record for Spain, which for the first time exceeded the milestone of 50% electricity from renewable sources, specified REE in a press release.

According to the Spanish group, the leading source of electricity for the second year in a row was wind energy, with production of more than 63.000 gigawatts/hour, or 23,3% of the total electricity produced in Spain.

Photovoltaic installations produced 37.000 gigawatts/hour, or 14% of the national electricity mix. This figure is higher than that of hydropower plants, which generated 9,5% of Spain's electricity.

Nuclear electricity production remained stable (20,3% of the total mix), while that of gas power plants fell by seven percentage points, to 17,2%.

These figures “are irrefutable proof that the ecological transition is making solid progress in our country”, underlined the president of REE, Beatriz Corredor.

The government of socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has committed to increasing the share of renewables in Spanish electricity production to 74% by 2030, thanks to the strong sunshine and numerous windy areas that the country benefits from.

In this context, mega-projects for solar and wind farms have multiplied, favored by massive investments, particularly in sparsely populated areas in the north and center of the country.
