With a speed of 7 m/s and a throughput of 4.500 pphpd, it is today the fastest single-cable urban system with the highest throughput in the world!
POMA, pioneer and world reference in cable transport, has once again provided its know-how and expertise to design and create an innovative and sustainable mobility solution, in the heart of the city. After 2 years of work, the first passengers on this new line have taken off.
An innovative transport solution to promote mobility between the city center and the West area of Santo Domingo
To meet the mobility challenges linked to the strong demographic growth of its capital, the Dominican Republic has developed an ambitious program to strengthen its transport infrastructure. After having already awarded POMA the installation of a first cable car line commissioned in 2018, the government has entrusted the Isère industrialist with the design and installation of this second line.
The very first urban gondola in the world to be operated at a speed of 1m/s was designed and built by POMA, and is now welcoming its first passengers. The monocable uses the air for 7 kilometers and serves 4,20 stations, to promote soft mobility between the city center and the outskirts.
Integrating into the city's intermodal transport plan, this new line will benefit the 400.000 inhabitants of the west of the Dominican capital by connecting the municipality of Los Alcarrizos to line 2 of the metro. If line 1 of the cable car made it possible to fly over the Ozama river which isolated part of the population from the rest of the city, with this second line POMA allows the inhabitants of the West of the capital to free themselves from dense and very congested areas that impede travel to the city center.
For President Luis Abinader: "With this new cable car line, the objective is to continue to generate a process of transformation and social cohesion on a metropolitan scale, through the establishment of safe and dignified public transport, complementing the local mobility offer. , giving an opportunity for access and integration to historically marginalized sectors of the municipality of Los Alcarrizos. With this cable transport line, associated with all the works undertaken for the modernization and extension of the existing transport network, we expect a major transformation of the mobility of the entire city of Santiago, in all its aspects. Mobility will be more efficient, more ecological, faster, more accessible, more pleasant. »
Line 2 of the “Teleferico Santo Domingo” extends over 4,20 km, with 4 stations connecting more than 23 neighborhoods to the west of the capital. A single transport ticket to travel on the entire network of the capital will allow you to use one of the 157 cabins that crisscross the Dominican sky, and to connect the heart of the capital in the most accessible, fast, reliable way. and comfortable, via this own-site transport, forgetting journeys of more than an hour by car or bus on the saturated road network.
world premiere
The T2 line in Santo Domingo is the very first urban gondola to be operated at a speed of 1m/s!
The second urban cable car signed POMA in the Dominican Republic, a third under construction
In 2018 the people of Santo Domingo were pioneers by installing the very first urban cable car in the Caribbean. With this second line also produced by POMA, the leader in cable transport in urban areas, further strengthens the international influence of French industrial know-how and the company's expertise.
POMA is currently installing the country's third urban cable car line, a project started in the fall of 2021, in Santiago de los Caballeros to support the urban development of the country's second city. At the heart of this project, a soft and sustainable mobility service accessible to all will include a monorail, bicycles, electric buses and a 2-seater gondola for a connection of nearly 12 km. The Santiago de los Caballeros gondola will be the 4rd POMA line built in barely 3 years in the Dominican Republic, making cable transport the symbol of innovative and virtuous mobility at the service of the country's development.
For Fabien Felli, President of POMA: “We are particularly happy to see today the commissioning of this cable car, a project supported by the highest authorities in the country, and which will have a concrete, beneficial impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of inhabitants of Saint -Domingo. »
For Benjamin Dunesme, Project Manager: “This great industrial adventure carried out alongside our local partners is a source of real pride for POMA. An achievement made possible thanks to an international team integrating Dominican and Latin American technicians and engineers to assemble, connect, test, operate and maintain this system! »
Mobility by cable, a virtuous transport at the service of social inclusion
100% electric, silent and carbon-free, with a small footprint, the urban cable car fits into its environment to reduce car traffic and the associated nuisances. With its ability to overcome obstacles (river, drop, railway junction, congested areas, etc.) and its light infrastructure, the cable car is a relevant solution to environmental and mobility issues. In addition, transport by cable has the advantage of running on its own full lane, guaranteeing high regularity and a guaranteed journey time.
Thanks to its electric motor, the urban cable car is 30 times less polluting than a car on an equivalent route. It thus opens up new possibilities for getting around, without polluting, quickly, efficiently and pleasantly, by offering a unique view of the entire city. In Santo Domingo, it is equipped with the latest generation Direct Drive® motorization, offering reliable and ecological transport. This POMA technology has three advantages that are part of a complete eco-responsibility approach: a sharp drop in energy consumption, no presence of oil, and finally a significant reduction in noise pollution.
The soft mobility offered to all by cable transport means better living conditions for local populations, who are integrated into their socio-economic environment. By directly connecting residents to sources of employment and upgrading public spaces, the authorities intend to give new economic and social impetus to the neighborhoods served by the line.
