Rockwool unveils Rockfit PV, a new generation of solutions specially designed for the renovation of steel flat roofs

In this respect, the Renewable Energy Production Acceleration Act (APER) has required since July 2023 that 30% of the roofs of commercial buildings over 500 m² and offices over 1.000 m² be covered with renewable energy production or greening devices. This percentage will be increased to 40% in 2026, and to 50% in 2027. This legislation should encourage the development of the roofs of French buildings, a market with an estimated potential of 50 million m².

Renovating a roof terrace offers a unique opportunity to improve the existing property. Not only does it ensure the longevity of the building, it also promotes sustainable property management and the production of renewable energy. However, installing photovoltaic systems on existing structures can pose technical and safety challenges. Therefore, the use of non-combustible and durable insulation is essential for fitting out your roof terrace. Rockfit PV: the ideal solution for the renovation of roof terraces

Rockfit PV is thin and easy to install, while respecting the required heights to ensure optimum sealing. Its limited load preserves the integrity of the structure on which it is installed. This innovative system can be applied to existing insulation laid on ribbed steel sheet. It integrates a waterproofing coating and a flexible photovoltaic module, thus offering a complete and efficient solution.

Reducing the risk of fire when installing photovoltaic panels

Fire safety is one of the main concerns related to the installation of photovoltaic modules, especially on flat roofs. There are two types of fire risks: the photovoltaic panel can be the source of a fire due to overheating of the equipment or can promote the development of a fire in the underlying structure and thus increase the heat load, therefore the spread, penetration and power of the fire.

However, photovoltaic module fires on flat roofs are difficult to extinguish. Firefighting teams may have difficulty reaching the source, which is partly covered by the panels, and may have to activate their own safety devices if the roof fails, with an additional risk of electrocution.

Designed in rock wool, ROCKWOOL insulation products can withstand up to 1000 °C. Combined with careful installation, they can contain and prevent the spread of a fire. The use of non-combustible materials such as rock wool is also recommended in the APSAD D20 standard by the National Centre for Prevention and Protection (CNPP).

A fully recyclable solution

ROCKWOOL stone wool, which is derived from volcanic rock, has excellent durability. In addition, it is infinitely recyclable. Thanks to its Rockcycle service, which has been available in France for over 10 years, ROCKWOOL collects and recycles waste or excess rock wool to produce new insulation. This service has enabled the collection and recycling of over 3.500 tonnes of rock wool on the French market in 2024.
