Solar energy is attracting more and more people: +11% in 1 year
They were 20% in 2022, they are now 31% of French people consider installing photovoltaic panels (21%) or already have them (11%)1. Among those considering this solution in the future, young people under 35 are the most numerous (28%). Indeed, solar energy is truly seen as a solution for the future and part of the response to climate challenges. The energy crisis that Europe has been going through for months has something to do with it. Beyond growing ecological awareness, the French are considering and rethinking their own energy “mix”. With its lower production costs, easy installation and flexibility, solar is the big winner of the energy transition.
The recycling of photovoltaic panels: a central element to make the leap
The decision to equip oneself with solar panels is confronted with the life cycle of these panels. Indeed, for 71% of French people, installing photovoltaic panels at home only makes sense if they can be recycled1. This was even a hindrance for nearly 1/3 of them thinking that this was not the case (27%). A received idea since the eco-organization Soren estimates that thanks to the quality of its treatment process, the recycling rate is between 90% and 94% depending on the treatment process.
“It is essential for us to know the expectations of the French. Their message is clear: they are ready to install photovoltaic panels but knowing the ins and outs. We can only understand them, the sector can seem complex. It is our role to raise their awareness and make information on recycling accessible. » Nicolas Defrenne, CEO of Soren.
A strong interest on the part of the French for the sector but an increased need for information
The French have a good knowledge of the sector, they are for example 73% to answer that it is possible to recycle the materials composing the photovoltaic panels. A figure equivalent to the previous year. On the economic side, they are also aware of the creation of economic value in the sector (68%, +10% vs 2022) and the creation of jobs generated (69%, +10% vs 2022).
However, 83% believe that there is a lack of information concerning the recycling of photovoltaic panels. This is shared by all categories of the population, and in particular by the French who intend to equip themselves (88%). They are still 43% to think that photovoltaic panels are not recycled in France. A lack of knowledge of the French industry that Soren intends to overcome, particularly at a time when the volume of end-of-life panels is set to increase. Indeed, 150.000 tonnes will reach the end of their life in 2040.
