RE2020 and low-carbon concrete: the SNBPE supports specifiers in the ecological transition

While the term low-carbon concrete is widely used, it is not, however, the subject of an official definition based on a normative or regulatory framework.

With the entry into force of the RE 2020 scheduled for January 2022 and in order to support construction professionals in their choice, the National Union of Ready-Mixed Concrete (SNBPE) has designed a reference tool proposing the thresholds defining low carbon concretes for representative parts of structures, depending on the exposure classes and the strength class of the concrete.

The right concrete, in the right place, for the best use

“Low carbon” concrete develops performance, qualities of use and durability equivalent to conventional material, while emitting less greenhouse gases.

However, between the various regulations, the legislation governing construction standards and the application of new environmental standards, it is not always easy to navigate. The SNBPE engages on a daily basis with its members and construction professionals, in order to provide them with insight into the deployment of constructive solutions and the choice of the right concrete, with a lower carbon footprint.

A prescription and decision support tool

The SNBPE publishes a document which aims to be concise and whose objective is to establish indicative values, differentiating low-carbon concrete from conventional concrete according to the destination of the constructions. It is based on examples of representative structures by integrating their exposure class to their environment, their geographical position, the phenomena related to weather and climatic risks as well as their resistance and durability.
