“This direct purchase contract for electricity from renewable sources (PPA or Power Purchase Agreement) for a period of 20 years will allow Plastic Omnium to benefit from an overall annual production capacity of 45 GWh of electricity”, indicates the press release, “which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 20.000 people”.
“These new low-carbon energy production capacities will allow Plastic Omnium to significantly increase the share of renewables in its energy mix,” said its general director, Laurent Favre, quoted in the press release.
This contract with EDF “marks a major step in achieving our ambitious roadmap towards carbon neutrality, while securing our long-term energy costs,” he continued.
More precisely, this contract will allow the French equipment manufacturer, which employs 40.500 people, to “take a further step in its objective of carbon neutrality on its scopes 1 and 2” (direct greenhouse gas emissions), affirms the business.
Plastic Omnium is committed to achieving carbon neutrality in 2025 for these direct emissions, which it has so far reduced by 26% compared to 2019. Carbon neutrality for indirect emissions (scope 3), by far the most important for an automotive supplier since they represented in 2022 29.915 kt CO2eq for Plastic Omnium, or 78,5 times more than its direct emissions, is targeted for 2050.
The renewable electricity will be produced in five photovoltaic plants from EDF and its subsidiary Luxel. These power plants “will supply the 14 French sites of Plastic Omnium”, it is specified.
“For the EDF group, the signing of this contract contributes to the ambitions of its Solar Plan which aims to make the group one of the leaders in photovoltaics in France,” indicates the press release.
