Michel Barnier said on Tuesday, October 1, before the National Assembly that he was open to "reasonable and fair adjustments", in consultation with social partners, on the much-criticized pension reform in force since last year.
"Certain limitations of the law passed on April 15, 2023 can be corrected. The issues of progressive retirement, professional wear and tear, equality between women and men in retirement deserve better than rejections," he declared during his general policy statement.
"On these subjects, we will propose to the social partners to consider reasonable and fair arrangements," he added, without specifying a deadline or timetable.
But "it is imperative to preserve the sustainable balance of our pay-as-you-go pension system," he also stressed.
The unions are calling for the repeal of the pension reform adopted by the government of Élisabeth Borne in spring 2023.
This repeal was one of the key demands of the demonstrations organised on Tuesday across the country by the CGT, FSU and Solidaires.
The position expressed by Mr Barnier before the deputies is in line with the public statements he had already made since taking office at the beginning of September.
