Paris-Montparnasse station takes a major step in its transformation with the installation of its new glass footbridge

Formed at the heart of the transformation project of the Parisian district of Montparnasse, the metamorphosis of the 4th station in France has made great strides in its work with the arrival of the new glass footbridge.

Last straight line before the end of the transformation of the station

During this 3rd phase of renovation of the Montparnasse station, the replacement of the concrete footbridge by a majestic structure in metal and glass enhances the Vasarely hall. An emblematic operation which marks the final stage in the modernization of the station with a totemic element.

This footbridge marks a key stage in the progress of the station transformation project. It will be finalized and then put into service at the end of the work in a few weeks.

A breakthrough that illustrates the promises of this transformation project: improving the comfort of visitors, and opening up the station to the city by providing more natural light.

A remarkable technical performance

The footbridge arrived in four sections about twenty meters long and 2 to 5 meters wide. The heaviest weighs 17,2 tonnes.

The four sections were transported over 4 consecutive nights by exceptional convoys to the rue du Commandant René Mouchotte without affecting the activity of the station and in compliance with health measures. To allow their final transport, the sections were unloaded from the street by a crane and were towed into the station at the level of the transverse platform where they were transferred on rails. An exceptional delivery both by the design of the gangway and by its assembly on site.

This transformation project reflects the ambitions of SNCF Gares & Connexions and Altarea Commerce: to facilitate the flow of all travelers, restructure the interfaces of the station with the neighborhood and develop its attractiveness with a new program of shops and services meeting the expectations of all.
