Desire for originality, need to give meaning to our projects, recycle, transform and reuse, all these expectations find an answer in the use of pallet wood to create universes and furniture to the desire and image of each...
One could imagine, given the simple quality of pallet wood, because of their primary use for industry, that it is a waste to protect them or that it is useless to decorate them. But these woods are still wood, generally from resinous essence and therefore can greatly benefit from appropriate protection. These non-autoclaved media appear light yellow when new and rather dirty gray after several uses.
At the dawn of their second life, a little advice guide!
The commandments for the proper use of pallet wood:
Step 1 - Lifting - Cleanse and sober up:
- If the wood is not gray but simply dirty: a simple soaping carefully carried out with a suitable product should make it possible to find a yellow and clear wood as at the origin.
- If the wood is very gray with a dirty, tarnished appearance, it must be sobered up to restore its original appearance.
Note: if the recovered pallet wood has leftover paint or other very encrusted products, it must be stripped and rather than using a stripper which would make the cost of the renovation operation too high, it is better to "stripping" mechanically, i.e. sanding (40 grit sander).
Clean and sobered pallet wood is ready for maintenance.
Step 2 - Makeup - Decorate and protect:
It is customary to use a saturator on the wood of a terrace or garden furniture, because not being film-forming, this finish makes it possible to avoid the risks of abrasion and flaking. However, on pallet wood it may not be necessary to use such an expensive product. In addition, the appearance of a clean palette does not necessarily give the most beautiful wood effect and a semi-opaque or colored opaque finish will often be more appropriate.
Good to know: it is necessary to sand lightly (grain 120) before applying the finish so that the rough aspect is erased and the risk of splinters is avoided.
Pallet wood, we pamper them: Zoom solutions Owatrol®
To clean and sober:
- SOAPCLEAN is the latest addition to Owatrol® in the wood cleaning family. It is a gentle, non-aggressive soap that is ultra-effective for cleaning and degreasing all wood that is simply stained. Its composition concentrated in active elements guarantees its non-aggressive effectiveness on the supports. Clever: it is also a daily cleaner and not just for renovation! It is particularly effective on greasy stains and saves bad post-barbecue situations, for example, since it can be used on a specific area without the need to treat the entire surface.
- NET-TROL® to sober up with its very practical gel formula for an openwork support like a palette, application 15 minutes then rinse.
To protect and decorate - Special new palette:
Still with its strategy of taking care of all woods and with the desire to promote the reuse and renovation of materials, the Durieu group with its Owatrol® range has developed OWAPAL, a new finish specially dedicated to pallet wood.
OWAPAL in a nutshell
Impregnating and decorative:
- A hybrid aqueous phase protection, alkyd and acrylic, very impregnating which goes into the wood to protect it from the inside
- A multi-effect decorative finish: with one coat, you get a ceruse effect that reveals the grain of the wood through the finish.
With 2 layers, the rendering is more opaque and with 3 layers the appearance is totally opaque. We can thus hide or play on the color disparities of the initial support.
- 3 shades that can be mixed together to multiply the shades.
Smart:
- The first layer impregnates the wood and the following ones reinforce its protection. And even if the layers wear out on the surface, the first allows you to keep the white, gray or taupe decorative effect.
- It is possible to create effects of color depth by desired retouching when applying with a brush.
- To obtain a uniform rendering, it is necessary to apply according to the geometry of the wood from one end to the other of each plank.
- Easy maintenance: simple cleaning and final ginning when there are 3 coats before reapplying.
