Next August 1 will mark Overshoot Day, that is to say the date of the year, calculated by the NGO Global Footprint Network, from which humanity has consumed all of the natural resources that the planet is capable of producing in one year to regenerate its consumption or absorb the waste produced.
In 2024, Overshoot Day therefore comes five months before the end of the year, and one day earlier than in 2023, a year which marked a slight decline for the first time in decades, excluding the COVID period. In 1970, Overshoot Day occurred on December 29.
This August 1st is an opportunity to remember the planetary limits, especially since the counter does not start from zero every January 1st, these tensions accumulating year after year. The situation calls for a general awareness which must involve all of our societies: from the economic fabric to the leaders of the great powers. Everyone, as a citizen, can limit the exploitation of natural resources, by rationalizing their energy and water consumption, by reducing waste or even by giving objects a second life.
