The Monasphere project, located near a place of pilgrimage managed by the Emmanuel Community in this town of around 1.500 inhabitants, was initially to accommodate 17 pavilions. He had created controversy, raising accusations of communitarianism.
The promoters had defended themselves in January, arguing that their "offer of thematic habitat with Christian spiritual places is universal and open to all". They had not responded to requests from AFP on Wednesday morning.
The mayor of the town, Nathalie Vigneau, indicates in a press release that her decision follows an unfavorable opinion from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of Indre-et-Loire.
In this opinion of February 25, 2022, the SDIS considers, in fact, that "the means of fighting the fire are insufficient in the sector to ensure the safety of property and people", according to the mayor.
"The project was therefore deemed (...) likely to undermine public safety and therefore could not be carried out," she continues.
"As part of the construction of a housing estate, it is up to the developer to carry out the work necessary for the service of the fire defense. This was not provided for in the Monasphere building permit file, which does not also did not respond to the request for this additional document before the deadline for the instruction period, a refusal of this permit had to be made", concludes the elected official.
A collective against this project had gathered a hundred people Monday evening at a public meeting in the village.
