More than 3.000 brownfield sites of more than 100 m2 have been identified in the Ile-de-France region by the end of 2024, a third of which will be in Paris and the inner suburbs, according to a study by the Institut Paris Région, the urban planning agency for the Ile-de-France region, reported a few days ago.
These brownfield sites total 3.500 hectares, almost the equivalent of "half the surface area of Paris," according to this study, which notes an increase in brownfield sites over the past year.
The overall figures are "stable," but the authors note a renewal of approximately "10% per year" of these spaces over the past four years. In one year, "nearly 280 hectares of identified brownfield sites have been rehabilitated and 430 hectares have appeared."
Most of these areas recorded are linked to the abandonment of industrial activities (1.239 ha) or correspond to undeveloped spaces (705 ha), agricultural (585 ha), followed by facilities (503 ha), quarries (503 ha) and finally brownfield sites linked to housing (164 ha).
In terms of numbers, however, wasteland areas linked to housing come first with 1.071 cases recorded.
This analysis by the Ile-de-France Brownfield Observatory, created in 2021 to meet the new imperative of land sobriety, was carried out based on field feedback from pilot communities, partners of the region's "brownfield plan" as well as the updating of land files and building permit submissions.
