In 2021, more than 9 Ile-de-France households applied for authorization to build a new house, an increase of +400% compared to the previous year.
The Domexpo Barometer also highlights an increase in the number of Ile-de-France residents choosing to build outside their region of origin, particularly in neighboring departments (rising from 23% in 2020 to 31% in 2021).

Life project planned for a long time or direct consequences of Covid-19: in 2021, 9.409 households in the Ile-de-France region chose to build a single-family house and requested a building permit, i.e. +34% compared to 2020 (and more 10% compared to 2019).
The latest Domexpo Barometer focuses on the region chosen by these individuals, including:
- 6.057 remained loyal to Île-de-France, i.e. 64% (v/s 69% in 2020). Like last year, the favorite departments are Seine-et-Marne (77) for 34% of them, Yvelines (78) for 21% and Essonne (91) for 19%.
- 3.352 chose to build in another region of France, i.e. 36% (v/s 31% in 2020).
Focus on households that build outside Île-de-France...
Among the 3 Ile-de-France households who wanted to build a new house in 352 outside Ile-de-France:
- 35% chose a department on the Atlantic border (v/s 33% in 2020), mainly in Vendée (85), Morbihan (56) and Gironde (33);
- 31% did so in a department bordering the Ile-de-France region (v/s 23% in 2020). The leading trio is made up of Oise (60), Eure-et-Loir (28) and Eure (27). This increase is mainly explained by the desires / needs of Ile-de-France residents to move away from urban centers, while maintaining a professional activity in the Paris region. This trend has been favored in particular by the generalization of teleworking;
- 7% opted for the Mediterranean border (v/s 12% in 2020), mainly in the departments of Var (83) and Hérault (34).
For Daniel Lair-Lachapelle, President of Domexpo: “The purchase of new single-family homes began to increase in autumn 2020 and intensified in 2021, particularly in Île-de-France, with a 34% increase in building permit applications. The weeks of confinement linked to Covid-19 have indeed reinforced the desire of the French to live in a house with a garden, and sometimes that of moving away from urban centers... For this, in particular because of the tension on the prices of land in Île-de-France but also the scarcity of these, the Ile-de-France residents are choosing, more and more often, to build outside Île-de-France, while staying close to it . They are now no longer afraid to move away from this region and spend more time in transport to get to their place of work. Oise (60), Eure-et-Loir (28) or Eure (27) are among the favorite departments. It should also be remembered that the generalization of teleworking has also made it possible to amplify this trend. »
