For Benoît Payan, Mayor of Marseille: “It's a great victory for Marseille. This victory, we went to seek it directly in Brussels. It is the victory of a project, the victory of a will, of an ambition for a city that meets the challenges of the XNUMXst century. It is also the victory of a city that succeeds when it comes together. Today Marseille is taking another step towards a greener city, a city that responds to climate, environmental and social challenges, a city where you can breathe better. »
This collective victory is the founding act of a new era of ecological transformation which is opening up for Marseille. This common project is a historic means of catching up with a backlog accumulated for too many years, of fighting against inequalities and restoring a living environment that meets the expectations and needs expressed by the people of Marseilles.
This labeling is the reward for a project carried out by the municipality with the support of a hundred institutional, associative or private partners who have invested themselves in proposing a program that meets the challenges.
It will enable the city to carry out, through engineering and European subsidies, the environmental transformation projects that are necessary to make the city a model territory for ecological transition.
This labeling will offer the City, in close collaboration with all of its partners, the opportunity to work on concrete projects in the coming months on the question of the return of nature to the city, transport, the thermal rehabilitation of the building stock and public facilities of the City, on the production of renewable and sustainable energies, including citizen inclusion and innovation.
This is part of the continuity of municipal action on the revegetation of parks, gardens and schools, the renovation of buildings and public facilities in the City, the fight against air pollution, the promotion of soft mobility and sorting of waste or the protection of terrestrial and marine biodiversity.
This first victory honors the City and commits it. In the coming weeks, a working group will be set up, including the project partners, to work on drafting the “Climate City” contract that Marseille is preparing to sign with the European Commission.
The City of Marseille would like to thank all of its partners, mobilized for more than a year to build this application and now implement its transition project. It is thanks to the support and action of the Prefecture, the Region and the Metropolis, but also of institutional partners such as the University of Aix-Marseille, the Grand Port Maritime or the Chamber of Commerce and 'Industry, and private individuals such as CMA-CGM, Olympique de Marseille, Cap au Nord Entreprendre or associations such as Geres, FNE Paca, Massilia Sun System... that this candidacy convinced the jury of the European Commission.
Marseille will be up to the task entrusted to it, and is committed today to becoming a city which convinces by the solidity of its projects and its capacity to act sustainably for the preservation of the climate, the environment and the framework of life of all its inhabitants. The Marseille program will be resolutely ecological and social, for a greener and fairer city.
