In an interview to be published Sunday, April 27, in Ouest-France, Minister of Regional Planning François Rebsamen ruled out a return to the housing tax while considering the introduction of a "modest contribution" to finance municipal public services.
"We are not going to reintroduce the housing tax, no. Its abolition was a good decision; it created a gain in purchasing power; we will not go back on that," the minister affirmed.
But, Mr. Rebsamen added, the possibility of a "modest contribution" to "fund the municipality's public services" should be considered in order to "re-establish the link" between the communities and the citizens who live there.
The housing tax on primary residences was abolished in 2023. Property tax remains, paid by homeowners. "However," Mr. Rebsamen argued, "owning your own home does not necessarily mean being 'rich'."
"I want to make life easier for local authorities and give them back some freedom," said the minister, who is due to launch a meeting with local authority associations in Paris on Monday to, according to him, "simplify the lives of elected officials and the French people."
