Laying of the foundation stone of the biomass boiler room of the future Nord Alco heating network

On March 27, Michaël DELAFOSSE, Mayor of Montpellier, President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, President of ALTEMED, François-Xavier LAUCH, Prefect of Hérault, and Isabelle TOUZARD, Vice-President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, Delegate for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition and Energy, laid the foundation stone of the future biomass boiler room north of Route de Ganges in Montpellier, in the presence of Céline VACHER, Regional Director of ADEME Occitanie and members of the Council of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole and the Municipal Council of Montpellier.

This work marks the birth of a new renewable heat network, built with financial support from ADEME, which will eventually supply 19.000 housing units in the neighborhoods located between the University Hospital and the Mosson River. It is scheduled to come into service by the end of 2025, with buildings that wish to connect gradually starting in 2026.

The creation of the North-Alco Heat Network (RCNA) is one of the actions implemented by the Solidarity Territorial Climate Air Energy Plan (PCAETs) adopted by the Metropolitan Council in February 2023, aimed at developing renewable energies and energy sovereignty in the region. With a virtuous model where ecology and economic development go hand in hand, this boiler room promotes the use of wood from the region, and therefore supports a local sector, creating 30 long-term, non-relocatable jobs.

Co-financed by ADEME, the Nord Alco network will supply the Mosson and Cévennes sectors, as well as the University Hospital, with a controlled and stable cost for the heat produced. This strategic infrastructure represents a tangible gain in purchasing power for residents and offers an economical solution for the connected public services and businesses. It is an essential lever for reconciling ecological transition, social justice, and economic development in our region."
