ADEME and BRGM launch Geothermies.fr

The basement can play a major role in the energy transition. Indeed, its exploitation makes it possible to produce hot, cold and electricity whatever the meteorology, via geothermal energy and its various techniques. Active for decades, the geothermal sector is constantly improving thanks to innovations and the capitalization of many feedbacks.

At less than 200 meters deep, geothermal energy (called “surface”) can be used almost everywhere in our territory. It makes it possible to produce heat, cold and domestic hot water for buildings ranging from individual houses to eco-districts. It operates on more than 175 sites in France and still has very significant development potential.

Beyond 200 meters deep, this technology produces large quantities of heat and / or electricity. Currently, 76 facilities under this (“deep”) geothermal energy are in operation in France, two for the production of electricity, the others for the production of heat mainly distributed via heating networks.

With Geothermies.fr, ADEME and BRGM provide scientific and practical support for all audiences, whether individuals, communities or businesses to know and develop this sustainable and continuous energy.

In addition to an educational space intended to discover the various means to exploit the thermal energy of the basement, the site offers a cartographic space. It includes in particular:

• Geothermal resource maps at regional and local scales. They make it possible to identify the geothermal solutions most suited to the territories;
• Examples of surface geothermal operations and all deep geothermal operations in operation on the national territory, their main technical characteristics and their performance;
• A space describing the regulatory regimes to inform the holders of surface geothermal projects as to the steps to be taken.

Geothermies.fr also offers regional information spaces where the contact details of active local players and the list of the various aids allocated to the development of this energy will be provided.

The website details the regulations, applicable standards, and makes available all the practical and theoretical guides allowing professionals and specialized structures in the sector to benefit from good practices and the latest lessons from research.
