KONE was thus selected to replace 14 existing escalators in halls 2 and 3 of Orly Ouest. This complete equipment replacement project is an opportunity for KONE to install for the first time in France the latest generation escalators, the KONE TravelMasterTM 110 and KONE TransitMasterTM 120, equipped with the new KONE Direct DriveTM drive technology: an efficient and optimal response to facilitate movement.
Challenges to take up
The replacement of the escalators in halls 2 and 3 at Orly Ouest is part of a vast program initiated by Aéroports de Paris to offer connecting travelers quality services.
As part of this metamorphosis, KONE had two main challenges to overcome:
- the implementation of the 14 escalators was to be carried out at night and over a total period of 8 weeks (including the removal of equipment which has become obsolete and the installation of new ones) to reduce the inconvenience caused by the works for passengers.
- Taking into account the low ceiling height complicating accessibility to the work areas.
- The access environment to the terminal itself which is not dimensioned for the handling of parts of 10 tons and 13m long.
Maximum user safety
To ensure smooth and safe travel, escalators offer signaling elements and audible alarms that signal the direction of travel to best guide passengers.
At the same time, the KONE Direct Drive ™ drive system eliminates the need for a drive chain, increasing the reliability of the installation and reducing maintenance constraints.
Eco-efficient escalators for Orly Ouest
Aéroports de Paris has developed technical solutions to control the energy consumption of its terminals: over the past few years, all the security lighting at Orly West terminals have been replaced by LEDs, while the display screens have been replaced by LEDs. they switch off automatically when the airport no longer accepts passengers. Aéroports de Paris, which places sustainable development and energy savings at the heart of its concerns, has naturally chosen the latest generation of eco-efficient equipment to meet its needs.
KONE has thus installed escalators equipped with the KONE Direct Drive ™ drive system, the eco-efficiency of which provides 20% energy savings compared to other existing solutions.
The design of the intelligent frequency inverter enables operating modes to be optimized and energy consumption to be reduced: escalators stop when no users are present. A particularly valuable management in infrastructures with variable traffic conditions such as airports.
An attractive design
Beyond the technical performance, the KONE TravelMasterTM 110 and TransitMasterTM 120 escalators benefit from a wide choice of coverings for a perfect integration into the airport architecture.
The lighting solutions for the baseboards and the handrail by LED or the signs provide a functional, simple and elegant finish to the design of the escalator while guiding passengers.
Escalators are durable, eco-efficient and optimized for correspondence centers. They will thus be able to offer passengers at Orly West airport pleasant, fluid and safe journeys, even in the most demanding traffic conditions.
