Kingspan will lead the new sustainability task force for the Mercedes team. The mission of this working group will be to bring together expertise from various fields to help achieve the team's goal: to reduce CO2 emissions in motorsport through new approaches and technologies.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 Team: “We are delighted to welcome Kingspan to our team both as a partner and as chair of our new sustainability task force. Finding a company whose ambitions are to offer sustainable solutions that aim to reduce carbon emissions in their industry corresponds exactly to our vision and represents a real opportunity for both partners. We are making real progress in transforming our business to operate more sustainably. The ability to share expertise, resources and inspiration with Kingspan through our new Sustainability Task Force will really help accelerate change and awareness within our team and hopefully our sport. »
Based in Ireland, Kingspan is one of the world's leading providers of insulation and building envelope solutions for high energy performance, low carbon buildings. After launching its first sustainable development program (Net Zero Energy) in 2011, the group is continuing to deploy its "Planet Passionate" climate action plan, which is based on large-scale scientific objectives aligned with the scenario of 1,5 degree IPCC. Kingspan is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030, in particular with a responsible purchasing and supply policy to reduce the carbon footprint of its activities (optimization of the supply chain with the establishment of short circuits and the use of renewable energies ).
For its part, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team has set itself the target of reducing CO50 emissions in its operations by 2% by 2022 and is working on ambitious targets to achieve carbon neutrality.
The team's high-tech chassis factory in Brackley, UK, already uses renewable energy to power all of its operations, while its technology center in Brixworth in Northamptonshire generates more than half of its electricity from using solar panels and an on-site CCHP plant.
This commitment echoes Kingspan's products, systems and technologies that address critical challenges in the built environment, including improving energy efficiency, reducing embodied carbon, circular economy and preserving natural resources by especially water.
Kingspan products have been used to help create high performance buildings around the world for the team's parent company, Mercedes-Benz.
Gene Murtagh, CEO of Kingspan Group: “Two of the great challenges of our time are the decarbonisation of transport and the decarbonisation of the built environment. Kingspan and the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 team share the same determination to meet these challenges through technology, innovation and teamwork. I am delighted to convey this message to an audience of 500 million Formula One fans.”
High performance, sustainability, teamwork and innovation are the key themes of this new partnership. The Kingspan logo will feature on the team's cars at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton battles for the Drivers' Championship and Mercedes-AMG Petronas aim for the Manufacturers' award.
