With an avant-garde design and very clean lines, the house fits perfectly into the Alentejo landscape, the morphology of the land and its environment; a goal achieved through the use of materials that harmonize with local colors, in an ideal combination of concrete and Kebony Clear wood.
Sustainable Kebony Clear wood is an integral part of the FdP house, located in Alto Alentejo – a remote region of Portugal – designed by Portuguese architect Gonçalo Bonniz. With an avant-garde design and very clean lines, the house fits perfectly into the Alentejo landscape, the morphology of the land and its environment; a goal achieved through the use of materials that harmonize with local colors, in an ideal combination of concrete and Kebony Clear wood.
“One of our main motivations was to erect a house that would dominate the landscape. This project is strongly inspired by the place, with as guidelines the morphology of the land, the solar orientation, the view, the colors as well as the preservation of the trees, which contributed to sculpt the house and to promote its integration", explains Goncalo Bonniz. This chromatic integration "has been an important factor in the concealment of the house in this rural landscape, a successful connection thanks to the presence of multicolored, gray and brown slates, concrete with gray pigments and Kebony Clear wood", continues the 'architect.
Kebony Clear wood was applied to the facade without surface treatment. It features a dark brown hue that will turn silver gray over time and exposure to the elements, allowing it to blend in with the reinforced concrete used in the construction of the building. This color match was just one of the many reasons why Kebony wood was chosen for the exterior of this particular home. It is also worth highlighting its durability and stability, particularly important in a region with a harsh climate, as well as its controlled aging and the non-need for maintenance operations.
Kebony Clear wood is also very present in the interior of the FdP house. In addition to its application on the exterior facade and the terrace, this wood has also been chosen for much of the furniture in the house, including the kitchen area, as well as for the cupboards and circulation spaces, with doors more than three meters high.
All the construction works of Kebony Clear were carried out by Matriz – Sociedade de Construções, Lda. This wood is easy to handle, very resistant, and its softness to the touch allows a superior quality finish, without adding any product.
“This versatile application of Kebony wood on facades, terraces and furniture reflects the strength and stability of this material, but also its attractive aesthetics and long-lasting qualities. The FdP house is already a major reference in the Kebony portfolio,” comments wood engineer Mário Neves, Kebony representative in Portugal.
Kebony, which integrates the Clear range, is a durable and high quality wood, which benefits from an FSC certification. It stands out for its attractive appearance, hardness, stability and resistance, as well as for its ease of maintenance.
Kebony is a real, high-end, ecological and durable wood, used in many outdoor applications: decking, cladding, roofing and furniture.
Kebony technology is a patented production process that improves the properties of softwoods to give them characteristics comparable to those of exotic woods.
Thanks to an environmentally friendly process, the woods are impregnated with an organic liquid from agricultural crop waste.
By heating the wood, the furfuryl polymers are impregnated into the cell walls of the wood, increasing its density and dimensional stability, and giving it a dark brown color similar to a tropical wood.
