The regularization of undocumented migrants working in shortage occupations, vigorously contested by the right, will figure well in the government's immigration bill, assured AFP on Wednesday, September 6, MP Sacha Houlié (Renaissance), after a meeting at Matignon.
"There will be the measure in our text. Today I have matignonnesque and Elysian commitments which tell me that the measure will be in the text", declared the president of the Commission of the laws to the Assembly, after meeting Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne with a dozen deputies.
There are persistent rumors that the executive is considering removing the measure from the text, or returning it to a simple circular, in order to gain support from the right. The Prime Minister said she was ready on June 14 in an interview with Le Figaro to discuss the "modalities" of a residence permit for undocumented workers in shortage occupations.
Questioned by AFP, Matignon affirmed to defend a text on immigration "balanced and as effective as possible".
For his part, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, explained to franceinfo on Tuesday that he wanted a text walking on "two feet", "very hard with the bad guys" and "nice with the good guys".
"The LR parliamentarians, sometimes, are the first to write to me to ask for the regularization of such and such a person individually. I therefore ask them for a little consistency", he pointed out, saying he was confident in the reaching a "political compromise" which will be "the middle ground between what we propose and what the Senate proposes", dominated by the right.
The examination of the government bill had been interrupted in the upper house last March, before its arrival in the hemicycle. The Senate Law Committee had adopted it, tightening it considerably, but without really discussing the measure on shortage occupations, a discussion that it preferred to reserve for the public session.
