Housing building permits issued over the past year continued their dizzying fall in August, according to statistics revealed Thursday September 28 by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, figures now followed by those for projects started.
Between September 2022 and August 2023, 379.900 permits were issued. This is 27,9% less than during the previous 12 months.
The fall in building permits has been inexorable since last August, when it peaked at 526.900 due to two calendar effects.
Permits were boosted by the influx of applications submitted at the end of 2021, before the entry into force of stricter environmental regulations (RE2020), then by a new peak of permits in August, the deadline for communities to receive aid of state construction.
Since then, the number of new housing units authorized each month has stabilized a little above 30.000, a low figure.
Developers are indeed suffering from rising construction costs coupled with the erosion of buyers' purchasing power.
The number of construction sites started, which traditionally follows that of permits with a few months delay, has also fallen, to 319.500 over one year.
It has never been this low since 2014, when the ministry began publishing statistics.
