Historic conversion for the Hôtel des Postes in Strasbourg

Today, the architectural ensemble is entering a new era in its history, after 119 years under the aegis of Groupe La Poste (formerly PTT).

In the summer of 2021, the Hotel des Postes de Strasbourg will host residential accommodation, new and rehabilitated offices, a service residence for seniors and a brasserie-restaurant. Undoubtedly, this real estate conversion is committed to an unprecedented and exemplary heritage enhancement process.

As for the historic post office on Avenue de la Marseillaise, it will keep its location and will benefit from a total renovation. The public will be able to return to their functions as soon as the property is delivered.

The future in the making…

In spring 2019, the Hotel des Postes de Strasbourg will begin a complete reallocation of the building on all existing surfaces. This major project will be joined, in particular, by the creation of new surfaces and underground parking in the central courtyard.

Remarkably preserved from its origin, the neo-Gothic building, built at the end of the 1887th century (11.000) under Prussian occupation, boasts a site of more than XNUMX m² on the ground.

Located 500 meters from the listed monuments of Place de la République, the structure is listed as an “exceptional building” for the XNUMXth century and “interesting building” for the post-war reconstructed part (central body of the Avenue de the Marseillaise).

An extraordinary architectural restructuring

The project provides for the restoration and cleaning of exterior facades in full respect of the original facades and roofs (1896), in particular by the replacement of certain glazed frames and the removal of recent roof frames. The interior courtyard will be particularly highlighted and the glass roofs of the post office and the brewery will be rehabilitated.

The building's highest point, the Telecoms Tower (raised in 1952) will benefit from a crowning similar to its original appearance.

Between the inner courtyard and the Avenue de la Marseillaise, the crossing of the central body (rebuilt after 1945) will be fully restored. Thus it will open again to the city and will become accessible again from the Avenue de la Marseillaise.

A cluster (state-of-the-art office building) will be embodied by an entirely new set of two levels, whose transparent architecture will stand out and integrate perfectly into the central courtyard.

An underground car park will also be set up in the central courtyard.

In addition, the entrances to the building will be slightly adapted and improved to ensure perfect accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

Optimal conservation

Under the recommendations and guidelines of the Architect of Buildings of France, the main interventions on the existing building will be minor and limited.

For example, the main distribution routes (angular staircases and vaulted circulation galleries), with their preserved decor, will be kept identical, simply renovated and embellished. The facades on the street are not modified, simply cleaned and renovated.
