The energy audit carried out in 2019 at the Haribo production site in Marseille highlighted new sources of energy optimization not yet exploited. Indeed, the industrial process for manufacturing confectionery is based on the simultaneous production of cold and hot. The first is to evacuate heat, especially from carpets and workshops. This was dissipated in the outside air while at the same time, a gas boiler produced the steam used for another part of the process, in particular the ovens necessary for the manufacture of the famous candies Dragibus, Tagada, Smurfs, Marshmallows and so many others... Haribo's management then wanted to find solutions to optimize its consumption and avoid energy waste.
Equans experts have proposed an energy performance action (APE) based on waste heat recovery. Concretely, the heat evacuated during cold production is captured and reinjected into the manufacturing process. Since its commissioning on January 5, 2021, a new boiler powered by this waste heat has replaced the one that operated on gas and which is only operated in the event of technical shutdowns of the virtuous installation, which has not happened. not produced in the past year.
The multiple benefits of the energy performance contract
Eligible for CEE subsidies (energy saving certificates), the installation of the cold unit with heat recovery was supported by Axima. Signing an energy performance contract even allowed for additional improvements leading to a very rapid return on investment in less than two years. Equans was committed to generating 60% energy savings. The results go beyond this ambition by posting today an 80% reduction in energy consumption compared to the gas boiler. Consumption has been reduced by 1550 MWh with, as a result, a reduction in emissions of -600t of CO2 in one year.
For Pascal Bernard, Industrial Director of Haribo France: “Haribo contributes to meeting the climate challenge by choosing virtuous industrial processes and pragmatically implementing the best technological solutions available. Improving energy performance makes it possible to reduce dependence on fossil fuels alone and to participate in the energy sobriety approach. The decarbonization trajectory of our industrial model is based on the solutions offered by our service provider Equans. »
For Gilles Cotte, Development Director of Equans France: “Innovations are multiplying to meet the challenges of our customers by helping them to consume less, green and flexible. Waste heat remains the greenest energy. It is also a major source of savings as the issue of energy costs is emerging as a major issue for the industry of tomorrow. To obtain such results, our teams are fully mobilized to design, install and continuously monitor the installations. »
