Generalization of bio-waste bins in the streets of Paris, no home collection

Around 500 new bio-waste bins will be available in the streets of Paris by the end of 2024, the Paris town hall announced on Thursday, December 7, which will not generalize home collection, which has been tested for several years in three districts of the capital.

These bins must be "less than three minutes" on foot from the homes of "all Parisians", explained to AFP the deputy for cleanliness and waste reduction, Antoine Guillou, Thursday on the sidelines of a presentation of the device to the press.

At existing sorting points, the town hall aims to install around 500 bins dedicated solely to bio-food waste by the end of 2024.

Until now, the capital had 2020 terminals present in food markets since 200, indicated Antoine Guillou.

However, the town hall is putting an end to the specific home collection of this bio-waste: carried out in three districts (2017nd, XNUMXth and XNUMXth) since XNUMX, the experiment will end in September.

A decision justified by “the relatively low tonnages collected”, explained Antoine Guillou to AFP in November.

These developments aim to respond to the framework set by the 2018 European directive and the 2020 anti-waste law: these provide that a solution for collecting food leftovers be provided everywhere in France by January 1, 2024.

Provided by the recycling company Derichebourg, the collection of food waste will be carried out “every 48 hours”, specifies Mr. Guillou.

The “tens then hundreds of thousands of tons” of food waste collected in Paris will be transformed into biomethane, subsequently injected into the natural gas network, he explains.

The town hall estimates the proportion of organic matter in Parisians' household waste to be "25 to 30%", while the anti-waste law requires them to be excluded from incinerators.

Parisian food waste bins must be equipped with “probes” and “sensors” in order to measure the filling rate of the terminals and “adjust the frequency of collection”, indicates Mr. Guillou.

If the town hall does not set quantitative objectives for the first year, Antoine Guillou insists on the fact that it intends to "communicate very widely" in order to generalize the sorting of bio-waste.

To these hundreds of food waste bins must be added the generalization of waste collections from more than 1.000 public establishments in the city of Paris.

Only those which produce more than five tonnes of waste per year, most often nurseries or canteens, are currently concerned.
