It is the result of several months of work and discussions between the State (ministries, decentralized services and general management of the public establishment), the Center des monuments nationaux and the local authorities involved (department of Manche, region Normandy, Brittany region)
All the conditions are now in place for the new establishment to be fully operational within a few weeks, once the dissolution of the mixed union is implemented.
This exceptional site will now be managed in a unified manner, in close partnership with local authorities and the Center des monuments nationaux. Indeed, the new national public establishment of Mont-Saint-Michel will henceforth be responsible not only for the management of the abbey but also that of the dam, parking lots and shuttles connecting the Mont to the continent, and will be in full capacity of fulfill its mission of enhancing and developing the Mont and its territory. The board of directors of the public establishment is expected to meet soon to formally approve this step. Ultimately, the objective is for the establishment to be able to achieve funding autonomy.
The ministers address their thanks to the elected officials and territorial actors who have shown a great sense of the general interest to bring this process to fruition. They also salute the commitment of the director general of the national public establishment of Mont-Saint-Michel and his teams, as well as of the president of the CMN. After the work to restore the maritime character of Mont-Saint-Michel, completed in 2015, and those concerning the abbey and the ramparts, which continue today, as part of the recovery plan, by the restoration of the building of La Merveille is a new era for this jewel of national heritage, one of the most visited in France.
