European Parliament demands a carbon neutral, sustainable and non-toxic economy by 2050

The members of the Delegation of the Social and Ecological Left welcome the adoption of this second action plan which calls for binding targets for 2030 concerning the use of raw materials and the footprint of consumption, covering the the entire life cycle of each product category placed on the European market.

For Éric Andrieu, member of the Commission responsible for the environment and health: "The development of the circular economy is a strategic priority for the Union, because it allows both preservation of natural resources, sustainable consumption, improvement of the quality of life, regional development, creation of value and jobs and reintegration of vulnerable people ”. But we must be careful on one point, adds the MEP: “Recycling should not be a pretext to reintroduce dangerous substances that the legislation intends to eliminate. Banned substances must not come back to the Union market in consumer products through recycling activities! ".

"Ecodesign, collaborative consumption, the fight against planned obsolescence must become our legislative and regulatory mantra" insist the members of the delegation. With a central axis: “The circular economy must also be inclusive. The actors of the social and solidarity economy, such as associations or social enterprises, in the sector of re-employment and preparation for re-employment, must be supported financially and from a regulatory point of view, in particular in access to public markets ” conclude the members of the delegation.
